Soviet naval doctrine (at least after the war started, it was somewhat different before) was that the fleet should provide support to the ground forces and prevent enemy naval forces from intervening. As such, the ships are made at ‘making the best of what’s available’ principle, often utilizing tank parts or WW1-era weapons. This results in quite a lot of smaller ship types and few larger ones, with less-than-modern heavy weapons.

#2

Added ZiS-42 37mm self-propelled anti-aircraft gun on ZiS-42 halftrack as Soviet Union’s “tech 2” SPAA, replacing ZSU-37.

#3

Shouldn’t have either imo.

#4

If you can suggest a better heavy SP AA vehicle I’m all ears.

#5

They should have to rely on towed medium AA.

#6

(a question of terminology: there were no medium AA guns in USSR during WW2. 37mm AA gun was light, 76mm 3-K and 85mm 52-K guns were heavy)
The closest thing to mass-produced self-prop AA were the 75 fully armored ZSU-37 units (SU-76M shassis fitted with a rotating turret for the 61-K 37mm gun) built in 1944-1945, but those were initially thought of as a temporary measure (because of low rate of fire) and took no part in fighting (because by 1945 USSR had total air superiority). Makeshift AA vehicles such as various trucks with guns mounted on them had at least seen some combat. Railroad AA vehicles had seen a lot of combat, but those would not be suitable for us
So, we should probably make the towed gun buildable and see it the USSR has any problems with AA that other nations haven’t, and if it has, then something truck-based can be used (like the mentioned ZiS-42 with a gun).
ZiS-42 (if textured) can be used as a tractor for M30 howitzer - that was it’s initial role in the army.

#7

We could also maybe use it to replace the M5 Halftrack, if only to get rid of crappy American crap. It’d probably lose the heavy machinegun and not be nearly as armoured though… so maybe not.

#8

Thing is, ZiS-42 is very different from the M5 or, say, German halftracks. It’s just a truck with Kegresse-type tracked device attached. There were numerous cases of ZiS-42 being refitted into ordinary ZiS-5 because of track breakage (the reverse is also true, there were kits produced for field upgrade of ZiS-5 into something like ZiS-42). It’s basically a civilian-pattern vehicle, not armored in any way and not suited as an APC. Though no one except military would use it anyway, because of its high appetite for fuel (65-95 litres per 100km, depending on terrain conditions) - tracks have their bad side effects.

#9

Yeah, it’d definately have its weaknesses compared to everyone else’s armoured, armed halftracks, but the Soviets also have the BA-64 which IMO is rarely if ever used now – everyone just builds M5 halftracks as they’re stronger, can transport, and have a much better gun.

Of course, having unarmed, unarmoured ZiS-42 would create conflict of role with ordinary ZiS-5 truck since they’d both be essentially the same, the ZiS-42 perhaps having a bit more health due to its increased mass.

In either case I like the idea of using a Soviet-built something-or-other, and also think the BA-64 needs some sort of boost so it’s actually used.

#10

Alright, my final suggestion: Remove M5 Halftrack altogether from Soviet Union; increase BA-64 resilience to small-arms and decrease its buildtime. Soviets will rely on unarmoured ZiS-5 and BA-64, combined filling the same role as the Halftracks.

#11

Suggestion: make the boatyard (for smaller ships) be morphed from a special truck buildable at the veh yard. The truck model will have parts of the barges (which compose the boatyard) loaded on it, I’ll make that model easily. This gives access to ships slightly earlier than access to tanks (provided morph time is lower than tank yard build time, but the truck still has to travel to the water). Can morph gadget use terrain restrictions and not allow the morph if the destination unit cannot be built at the current location?

#12

Suppose that would be a matter of checking Spring.TestBuildOrder(unitDefID, x, y, z, facing) > 0 at the right place in the gadget. As far as I know, Spring.TestBuildOrder() takes into account everything a normal build order would take into account, so also maxWaterDepth, buildOnWater, etc.

#13

Good idea, seconded.
