Learning to skin/texture

If me or someone else wanted to learn to skin/texture some of the existing units, boats or structures, or model new ones, where would they start? I’m not sure if I’m up to the task or have enough time but I’d be willing to give it a try.

What programs do you use for skinning or texturing? How hard is it? What about modeling? Are there any simple tutorials I can view for this kind of thing?

For modelling i suggest blender (blender.org) as its free and works on linux, mac and windows.

There is a lack of texture artist (or they are very busy, :wink:) and italian, finns and french need skins, :wink:
